Rufus Sewell shines in new detective drama 'Zen'

The first two episodes of new BBC drama 'Zen' have whipped up a storm of praise. The drama stars Rufus Sewell as Aurelio Zen, the over-honest Italian detective, who appears to be the only non-corrupt person in the Italian police force. This role is unusual for Sewell as he is more used to playing the 'bad guy'- you might remember him as Count Adhemar, beating up Heath Ledger in 'A Knight's Tale'.

Somewhat surprisingly though, Sewell (now 43) manages to be quite likeable in this new role and his character's honesty is often almost humorous. He also has a great on-screen chemistry with former Bond-girl Caterina Murino, who plays a secretary.

Although Sewell plays a detective rather than a spy, certain comparisons must be made to Daniel Craig's James Bond, who also enjoyed a frolic or two with Miss Murino in Casino Royale.

Sewell wears the same perfectly-fitting suits (which so often get ruined) and wanders about with a similar suave style to Craig. Hell, there are even a few car chases and shootouts. However, it must be said that I definitely prefer Zen's Alfa Romeo to Bond's Aston Martin.

Jeremy Clarkson would be proud.

Episode 3 airs on Sunday at 9PM on BBC1.
